Anne of Green Gables and Little Women Now Available!

Pioneer Drama Service customers are thrilled to find both Anne of Green Gables and Little Women in our catalog this year! We are proud to offer these fine adaptations of American classics, which complement other timeless shows with strong female roles, such as The Little Princess, The Secret Garden and Pollyanna.

Anne of Green Gables, by Jody Davidson, has a running time of one hour and calls for a cast of two males and 9 females. Naturally, it’s been condensed significantly, yet the heart of the piece survives intact as we all remember both the joys and travails of Anne’s first days and years at Green Gables. Creative flexible staging and casting makes this skillful adaptation suitable for all levels of performance from high school theatre to college theatre, community theatre and professional theatre.

Playwright Jody Davidson is also a director and arts administrator whose career and accomplishments in the field of theatre for young audiences spans 30 years. She is the founder of the Rainbow Company Children’s Theatre and co-founder of both the Laguna Playhouse Youth Theatre and the Serendipity Theatre Company. She has the unique distinction and honor of being the only founder/executive director of three separate children’s theatres to be named the “Best New Children’s Theatre in the United States” by the American Alliance for Theatre and Education. In addition to her dedication to the field of family theater, her seminal work in the field of theatre for disabled artists has produced several scripts. Jody has been featured in People magazine and on Good Morning, America as well as in many other national publications and media.

Like Anne of Green Gables, Little Women is interlaced with warmth, family loyalty and traditional family values that are not often found in contemporary literature. The classic tale’s message is still relevant for audiences today as it tells the story of the March sisters on their journey from childhood to adulthood. With a strong female cast and a running time of 100 minutes (or two hours with the addition of two optional scenes), this adaptation is especially well-suited for community theaters and professional theaters.

Little Women is adapted by professional actor, writer and director Scott Davidson (yes, Jody’s husband!). He resides with his family in Chicago, where he is the Director of Theatre at Pleasant Company’s American Girl Place, a very successful retail store with a professional theatre especially dedicated to the needs and interests of young girls. He has been active in the family theatre movement since his own childhood when he was a member of the Rainbow Company Children’s Theatre Ensemble. He holds a BFA in Theatre from the University of Southern California and is a past board member of the American Alliance for Theatre and Education. He is the founding Artistic Director for both the Laguna Playhouse Youth Theatre and the Serendipity Theatre Company. These California theatre companies have both won national and international recognition.

We are proud to represent the writings of two such renowned playwrights. Pioneer Drama Service also carries The Velveteen Rabbit by Scott Davidson and Snow Child by Jody Davidson.
