Children's theatre: What are my suggestions?

It's always exciting to talk to a
theatre director. Many times during the year I'll have the opportunity to talk
with high school directors, middle school directors or community theatre
directors.

Whenever I talk with any school
director (often with community theatre directors) about my personal suggestions
on children's theatre plays and children's theatre musicals, I'll always speak
with complete honesty.

Many of my children's theatre
favorites are Vera Morris and Bill Francoeur children's musicals. For
non-musical children's theatre plays, I love the humor of Karen
Boettcher-Tate or Kathryn Schultz Miller. However, I think Pioneer Drama Service
carries the right show for any children's theatre company. The music in our
children's musicals is fun for the actors and loved by the audiences. As
for our non-musicals, there is an abundance of humor and action. We have
excellent stageplays. These stageplays are wonderful for children and any group
of adults and young audiences. You will always find quality playscripts for
productions of any budget or size!

Our musicals, musicals for children and musicals for middle school drama clubs and high school drama clubs are the best the nation has to offer.

Our musicals are special. Every day
when I speak with someone on the phone, I find that I receive compliment after
compliment on a Pioneer Drama Service musical comedy. Why?

First, we make sure that our musicals
are designed for elementary schools, junior high schools, middle schools, high
schools and many community theaters. Sets can be designed to be simple or, if
desired, can be very elaborate. Most of our musicals have few sets, making it
easier to perform. In addition, casts are designed paticularly for many schools
that have a predominately female cast. Moving on, the shows have high quality
music and come with CDs that can be used for performances and rehearsals. Cost?
Easy to afford.

I feel the strongest point, though,
is that they are not as well-known as your typical Broadway show. Broadway Jr.,
an excellent MTI creation, takes away the originality that our materials bring.
It's as one director told me, "My child felt so much pressure being Tevya. He
wanted a role in which he could portray someone who had not been seen a million
times. That's why we're back with you."

I am not putting down Broadway Jr. It
certainly has its positive points. However, people are drawn to our company
because of the balanced cast, music that has not been heard a million times and
has roles in which the young actors can pull together their own
characters.

We have close to 150 musicals that
are done thousands of times each year. We offer CD samplers in which you can
hear songs from each and every one of our musicals.

My opinion? We're the best on the
market when it comes for quality musicals that are perfect for middle school
plays, junior high school plays, high school plays and many community
theatres.

Take a look at where our shows have
been.

Creating a middle school drama club with a melodrama

I just returned from a
class at Newton Middle School in Littleton. My daughter was playing a dramatic
role as an attorney trying British soldiers in the Boston Massacre.

After the class, I went
to the Gifted and Talented teacher and asked about creating a drama
club. She was very excited. I enjoy working with middle school students.
They have a definite personality of their own and a unique
enthusiasm.

I decided to design a
melodrama club. I enjoy teaching melodrama to middle school students because it
takes all of the energy that they have and telling them to let go! The unique
charactors are fun and the audiences that come to watch love it.

If I decide to go ahead
with this full speed, their are two melodramas that I have been waiting to
direct. I have put together links to the shows and also have fun links to other
sites.

Full length plays, full length musicals, one act plays... he wrote 'em all!

I
have often been asked how I became publisher of a play publishing company. It's
really rather strange to be involved in something so unique. Here is the
story:

It was not unusual in our family to go see a play every week. Growing up
in Cody, Wyoming, it wasn't easy to find a musical or a play around the
small town. However, there were always the local community
theatre where they often put on children's plays and musicals. Of
course, when it was seasonal, you could always go and watch their Christmas
shows. Even when I was young, we would always go and watch the high school drama
department perform everything from dramas to children's theatre plays. I
always loved the comedies, though the dramas often meant a lot to me. I was even
in one or two junior high school plays when we lived in Cody. However, Dad
felt that he wanted to do something special. He knew that there were many types
of shows that would be great for all schools and community
theatres. So he decided to start his own publishing company and ventured
out to look for play scripts. He placed an ad somewhere which said: We are
looking for plays for children... scripts for schools... theatre texts...
playwrights! He wanted to become involved with theatre all over the United
States. He wanted to become involved with the theatre education process in
elementary schools to high schools! Don't forget community theater! He
wanted the dramatic material to be moral, as well. Holiday plays would also be a
strong part of the company, so he hoped. When he placed his ad, teachers started
sending in copies of the school plays that they had written. These stage plays,
though designed for amateur theatre, often did not have the quality that he was
looking for. But many school scripts that had been done for school
shows were excellent. He found high quality drama in the numerous small
cast plays and large cast plays that were sent in. He began to select the best
plays that would act as great drama aids for any drama class. Later, he
created a competition to bring in contest plays. During our time in Cody,
Dad even went back to college to receive a Master's Degree in drama. I learned
about reader's theatre when I went up to Billings, Montana to see him
perform. After that, Cody suddenly became to small for
us.

So, like improvisational actors, we took things as they came. Though
we were like amateur performers moving around without acting books, Dad
had class. In fact, his own acting class when we moved to Laramie, Wyoming.
Pioneer Drama Service, very small, was being run in Cody while we lived in
Laramie. Dad was going back to college at the University of Wyoming for another
degree in drama. While I was in Laramie, I enjoyed getting acting
parts and acting roles in our drama club. I even was in children's theatre plays
in a summer theatre camp at the University. These acting roles were not exactly
challenging but they were fun! Children of all ages came to see me in Elves and
the Shoemaker. (I did feel my acting was pretty good! It wasn't classic drama,
but I received a lot of applause!)

After Dad received a degree from the drama department at the University,
we moved to Denver. The company was then moved to Denver. While the company
began to grow, I was in the drama club at George Washington High School.
The drama department at the school had a teacher who was one of the best drama
directors around.

Meanwhile, the playwriting contest kept on bringing in more and more
drama for young audiences. It was obvious to Dad that teachers were looking for
drama lessons to use drama in the classroom as a teaching tool. Drama teachers
and their student actors wanted everything to help them in drama training, drama
workshops, and student theatre. Though we did not have any books
with monologues, we had plays that contained scenes that were
excellent for school performances like an all-school play musical. The
company began to purchase theatre books which we advertised
in Dramatics Magzazine. Dramatists who were teaching theatre in
classroom drama classes for classroom performances enjoyed them. But it
even stimulated young actors into writing plays for young audiences and young
performers. Youth theatre meant a lot to Pioneer Drama Service. We
would always go and watch classroom shows, especially when they used
our play resources. Personally, I loved watching the creative
dramatics by these amateur performers. Dad would even help directing kids with
dialogues.

When Dad tragically died in 1989, I took over. The company was still
growing and theatre education was always important to Debra (my wife) and me. We
knew the importance of theatre arts. Whether a play was for a church, high
school or professional theatre, we wanted to make sure Pioneer Drama
Service had playwrights writing a one act, full length, musical or a melodrama.

So here we are now. I was talking
to Dave Barton and Matt Bond who wrote the musical Tom Sawyer. They have been
friends of our family for years. Dave looked at me and said, "Your Dad loved
Shakespeare. He always used to say 'The play's the thing." And believe me, the
play was his thing. It shows with Pioneer Drama Service's success story. Below are a number of his
plays.

The fun thing about being a publisher is going into the editor's office and
seeing what is on "the board." The board is a simple chalkboard which provides
information as to what shows are being considered or have been excepted in the
future. The fun plays for middle school and high school drama departments that I
could see are I WAS A TEENAGE ZUCHINI, a hilarious farce by Craig Sodaro. A
pirate musical, with the score by Bill Francoeur is also going to come out in
the near future. Give me a call if you want to find out what additional shows
will be popping up.

Below are some of my favorite high school musical comedies and our
non-musical high school comedies. Check them out.

The summer has been filled with hard work and excitement, developing playscripts that are the best!

The summer is always a busy one for me. That is why it has been a while since I made an entry into my weblog. It is exciting because, in a month or so, we will have excellent stageplays for children, young audiences, families, schools and community theaters. We have the kind of shows coming out that producers, drama coaches, speach teachers and producers love. You see, I consider us the best. That is because we are "full service." We offer our customers everything when it comes to quality. We're talking quality one act plays. We're talking excellent childrens theatre playscripts. We're talking musicals that are excellent for community theaters, schools, churches and all other places that want the best. What about theater textbooks? We offer high quality textbooks that deal with costuming textbooks, reader's theater textbooks, makeup textbooks (and even makeup!) and improvisational theater textbooks. My editors have been working around the clock to bring you nothing but the best. I also have to share something else that is big going on at Pioneer Drama Service. We have purchased a huge building and will be moving. Don't worry. We will still be in Denver and only a few miles from our previous home. However, we are growing and growing and growing! That's why we're the best. We never stop bringing you more and more plays. When you think about the writers out there: Pat Cook, Bill Francoeur and Patrick Rainville Dorn... These are awesome writers who write for you. If you are interested in doing some classroom reader's theater plays, we have a ton of shows on our Internet site. Go check things out.

I'll be taking off for San Francisco in a few days. If you see me on the street, say "hi."

I was proud to be with Lee Blessing, playwright, nominated for Pulitzer Prize and other writers and directors

This past weekend I was on a panel where I helped to critique new plays for
the amateur theater stage and the professional theater stage. The people on the
panel included Lee Blessing, playwright. Lee Blessing's play, A WALK IN THE
WOODS, was on Broadway and London's West End. He has many off-Broadway
Productions and has received many awards including the American Theatre Critics
Award and the Great American Play Ward. I was also honored to be with Steven
Dietz who has won the Kennedy Center Fund for New American Plays Award. Perhaps
one of the finest panel members was Aoise Stratford, playwright. Though no one
can pronounce her first name, she is a wonderful person to have on a panel. She
gives wonderful feedback.

As I said, as publisher of Pioneer Drama Service, I was thrilled to meet and
work with Lee Blessing, playwright, Steven Dietz, playwright, Terry Dodd,
playwright, Nagle Jackson, playwright, Jane Page, director, Aoise Stratford,
playwright and Edith Weiss, playwright. It was a fun weekend. Have fun meeting
these people below.

It's time to update everything! Stage lighting for a high school stage? Theatre makeup for a high school? What will I need.

I just volunteered at Newton Middle School in Littleton, Colorado to be the
sponsor/director of their drama club. Unfortunately, lack of funding in our
schools is taking important classes such as drama out of the picture.

So, here I am. It's time to start choosing plays. I have decided to do one
act plays ideal for middle school students. I will also do melodrama. I think
that I'll go with melodrama first where I can involve a lot of children and get
them started in something fun. Melodrama is ideal for schools, churches and
community theaters which need large cast plays with comedy.

Down below, I have some wonderful websites to explore. These websites are
fantastic for the novice director or experienced theater director. They are
excellent resources for starting a theater or simply finding perfect books and
products to help out. I know I'll have fun. You too! It's always a great feeling
to get kids involved in theatre.

Children's Play Productions, Mystery Plays, Full Length Plays are big sellers

Pioneer Drama Service's day was incredibly busy yesterday. Hundreds of orders
are coming in each day and we are processing to fill each one, getting them out
the same day. That's why this will be a short message. I'm in charge of getting
them invoiced. That's right. I may be a publisher but I'm also active in getting
things rolling. The hard part? I'm going to be running the Newton Middle School
Drama Club, volunteering to make sure we get these kids on stage. I also need to
get our Spring Catalog put together. Lots and lots of work.

How I came to choose a large cast play for a drama club

They needed a drama club. With the cut in funding in Colorado, the Newton
Middle School Drama Club was no longer a drama club. It had disappeared. Dozens
of students were asking their teachers if the school would ever have a drama
club play performed again.

With two kids at the school, I decided to jump in. The first meeting drew
about 30 kids. In middle school, they tend to be mostly girls with a scattering
of boys. I needed to find a play that would meet their needs.

This past weekend I chose a melodrama. This melodrama gave me the flexibility
of using a lot of girls, a few number of boys and plenty of extras. The art of
melodrama also allows for a lot of extras including a master of ceremonies, a
warm-up sing along and possibly some olios at the end. Wednesday I'll put on my
famous melodrama workshop. Then it will be time to begin.

A call from one of the top websites on Music Education

Madness. It's as they say:

Teaching the Wonders of Music and Surviving It
with a Smile On Your Face

Music Education is so important in this day and age. Part of
that music education can be reinfoced by performning a musical theater play.
Pioneer Drama Service offers tons of resources, including musicals for middle
schools and high schools, that can be part of a musical education
program.

I have co-written a number of musicals that have been
extremely popular. Below are places you can explore that include some of my
musicals, as well as valuable resources when working in musical education for
the elementary schools, middle schools and high schools.

Though long ago, this Thespian Festival, filled with drama workshops, school plays and other thespian events was a thrill!

Yesterday afternoon, two teachers from Indian Ridge Elementary School (Cherry
Creek School District), two teachers came in to Pioneer Drama Service that would
be a perfect elementary school playscript for a large cast. After a long talk,
we decided on a show that would be perfect for an elementary school musical. It
was decided that they would do Kokonut Kapers, a musical theatre farce by Tim
Kelly, with music by composer Bill Francoeur.

It was then dediced that I would do my Melodrama Workshop at the school. I
have done my Melodrama Workshop at the International Thespian Conference and
have done it many times since for high school drama departments, middle school
drama students and elementary school drama thespians.

It was a great time. They left with a musical theatre play for elementary
schools and a future melodrama workshop!

Starting a new drama program at Newton Middle School in Littleton, Colorado

It's been a few days... maybe even weeks... since I kept you informed about
my volunteer work at Newton Middle School. I decided that the school needed a
drama program. Because of a lack of funding in our Littleton School District in
the performing arts, a drama club disappeared from Newton. I felt that it was
important to me and important to the school that I generate interest. After
putting out an announcement and with the help of Debbie Getzel, the Gifted and
Talented teacher at the school, we attracted close to 30 kids. Of course, some
of them dropped out. That comes with the shifting of middle school
interests. It was no surprise to me that the majority of the kids in the club
happened to be girls. That's no surprise. It's quite normal for a drama club to
have more girls than boys. In fact, most of our plays in Pioneer Drama Service
have more female roles than males. However, many of the parts are flexible.

The most difficult aspect of the club is the limitation of time. This is
because the club can only meet once each week and can only meet for an hour. To
work with this I chose a large cast melodrama that was 30 minutes long. The show
is THE PAPER BAG BANDIT, a melodrama by Tim Kelly. Tim was a genious when he was
writing plays. When I asked him to write a 30 minute play with a lot of
characters, Tim came out with this melodrama and RASCALS UNDER THE BIG TOP.

I have started rehearsals and they are going fairly well, though some of the
kids have not started to memorize lines. A lot of this is because I didn't put
out a decent schedule. I'm going to pull out a number of our play directing
textbooks and will work on being more organized. (I've listed a number of the
books below.)

I wasn't surprised at the high energy the kids have. However, it's working to
control the after-school energy and get the kids in the same track for an hour.
Things seem to be shaping up. To add to this, I started an olio group as well.
This group meets on Tuesday. They are taking short comedy skits and a large
variety of jokes for blackout purposes and making it into a nice selection of
olios. Want to know what an olio is? Or facts about melodrama. I also have links
to other sources.

Will the middle school drama school kids pull the play together?

It's an amazing thing about middle school kids. I've watched them do drama
for years and I think I got 'em figured out. In fact, now that I have two middle
school kids, I really do think I have them figured out. You see, when a
production nears, it's not unusual for the young actors to not have lines
memorized, be jumping off the walls.... In fact, nothing comes together until
the day of the production. However, since I am only seeing the kids once each
week, it's very difficult to pull this thing together. It's a rough one. When
you have a cast size of 20, when one kid is out of school due to illness, that's
it. However, I'm preparing myself. I know that we may end up doing a number of
things.

1. We may have to work with someone on the side to prompt kids with lines. I
basically can't stand it but I'll do it.

2. Have some kids use their scripts.

3. Cancel the gig. No way! Too much work!

4. It will pull together.

I really do think having a drama club that meets only one each week does not
work. I see a need to do it for two nights each week, using the additional days
for drama activities and/or rehearsal. Just have to see how things work out next
spring.

An asset: STAGING MUSICALS FOR YOUNG PERFORMERS by Maria C. Novelly and Adele Firth

Even though I am not putting on a melodrama, I am staging a show for young performers. I have found that utilizing STAGING MUSICALS FOR YOUNG PERFORMERS is an excellent asset. This book will begin to be offered by Pioneer Drama Service in January of 2005.

The book is a step-by-step guidebook for producing a successful show with young performers. I love it because it discusses theatrical basics, casting and rehearsals, costumes and makeup, scenery and props, stage lighting and sound effects as well as publicity and promotion. It truly is to me an invaluable guide for teaching acting.

So as December 7th creeps up on me, I am armed with my script, list of actors and director's book.

With a large cast production, many kids are often not able to come to rehearsals
because of illness. This group only met once a week. With only 8 rehearsals and
20 kids, we often did not even have a full cast at the production. Finally, on
the day of the production, I stuffed the kids full of pizza and had a rehearsal.
Then 30 minutes later, they went and had a great time. The big question is what
show will we do in March? With our company's biggest month coming up (January),
I'll worry about that one later.

What does a teacher need to do to work with a grant given to her to have students write a play?

Today I spoke with a teacher from Texas. She wanted to know where the best resources were for writing melodramas. Though I have to admit I would be the best resource, I pointed to many that our company has. One is BETWEEN HISSES-THE BOOK and BEYOND THE BOOS AND HISSES, a video. These are excellent resources.

I have written a number of melodramas and I always like to look at some of the best as models. Melodramas by Billy St. John, Rachel Davidson and, of course, my father, are terrific. In fact, she had said that they were looking closely at RUN TO THE ROUNDHOUSE, NELLIE as a great model. Made me feel great since my father wrote that many years ago.

wahad

stageplay, Wooing Wed Widing Hood, not only makes an excellent school play but a
play for our community. It is an excellent fund raising source because it has a

you have got to see what has been created! We have the best website in the play
publishing and licensing industry. It has taken years of planning, studying
numerous websites, brainstorming and bring in the best technical minds from our
company and a website design company.

The most incredible feature, in my opinion, is the “Search
Engine.” Unlike many of the other Search Engines in the play publishing
industry, it will help you find the right play. After using specific
keywords, it will narrow down the shows, allowing to view specific descriptions.
From these descriptions, you’ll find it simple to pick out specific plays you
are interested in reading. Of course, from there, I know you’ll find a quality
show that will bring a standing ovation to your theatre.

I am working with a company in the Netherlands to take Pioneer Drama Service Plays to Europe

A number of weeks ago, I was talking with Jack Welch who used to be with Baker's Plays. Jack left Bakers Plays and went on to take his plays to Europe. Jack called me up and said that a man by the name of Pieter Vink of Anco Entertainment B.V. would be calling.

Pieter has adapted numerous plays into Dutch. They include THE ODD COUPLE by Neil Simon. He also has adapted Piers Chater Robinson's adaptation of PETER PAN. The excitement at Pioneer Drama Service is that Anco Entertainment is looking to use many of our musicals! Of course, it's not just musicals... it's also full length plays. Our show, LARCENY AND OLD LACE, just came.

It’s fun and exciting… yet often scary!

Directing a play with middle school kids can be a frightening experience. Many teachers often tell me, “I don’t know if the show will go through. I have middle schoolers!”

I love directing plays with middle school actors. It’s amazing how they always pull it together in the end. The dress rehearsal may be a disaster, but the production is filled with energy, excitement and everyone shines.

Young teens, of course, are interesting. They are in the midst of finding out who they are. Peer pressure is a huge factor. The drama club? It’s always filled with a million girls and three boys. It’s truly a balancing act.

In a month or so, Newton Middle School will be producing TWINDERELLA. I’m the director and I’m about to panic. But then I take a step back and realize that every play that I have directed at Newton has been incredible. The kids always come through.

Was it successful?

Was it a successful? Did it meet my expectations, the kid’s expectations? Did it meet the parent’s expectations?

The one performance of TWINDERELLA took place after a pizza dinner. Each time I have put on a play with the Newton Middle School Drama Club, I always have the “party” before the play. I bring in dinner and allow the kids to unwind and, hopefully, prepare for the show mentally.

Things went well at the party. As they munched on cheese pizza, many game impromptu speeches. Many were emotional. Others were silly. Overall, the spirit of the room was proof that 6th, 7th and 8th graders could work together on something special. What about the performance…

Well, I’m not sure how to describe it. The show had the spirit that I wanted. However, when they accidentally skipped two scenes, it drove me crazy. I always separate myself from the show and let them go on their own. Although I allowed someone to prompt the actors, she didn’t do a great job. Oh, well.

The show went on without the two scenes and ended in applause. After I accepted my gift and thanked the parents, one of the kids yelled, “Let’s do the scenes we missed.” Suddenly, I was watching the middle of a play. I wasn’t sure if I should stop them. In fact, I was wondering if they were going to do the entire show. After a few minutes, I politely stopped them and had happy kids and happy parents go home.

Was it a success? As a performance, it will never win any awards. However, it was a project that helped bring community to the school, brought self-confidence to students and it brought the understanding of theatre and putting on a play.
