PUTTING ON A PLAY--Part 2

Putting on a play at your school, church or community theatre

PART TWO

Ok, you’ve got your text.  Now it’s up to you to find funding.  No budget, remember?   Its out there, truly it is.  I’d bet next time (can you afford to wait?) you do a little continuing education for your certification you might work in a class of grant writing, and don’t forget theatre and drama as well.  Grants are a great source of dollars, but they don’t come looking for you, you have to look for them.  Don’t forget the Internet.  It’s a wonderful resource for grant writing and other theatrical opportunities.  Did you know your local Target and Wal-Mart are wonderful sources of grants?  They are very area specific so stay closest to the school, but they do give many thousands of dollars back to the communities and schools.  You might as well be a recipient. Patience is a must with grants, they’re not instant and sometimes take months to even respond much less decide if they’re going to support your cause.  If they do, well breathe a little easier.  Your local merchants are another source.  Remember, when asking for support, remind them what a great tax deduction your school’s student theatre project is for them and promise to add their name to your list of supporters.

All by yourself?  Not on your life!  You have parents, grandparents, and interested citizens right in your community who would be delighted to share their talents if you just ask them. Everything from fund raising to set building to choreography to teaching lyrics to being stage assistants and gofers, if your school allows, that can be accomplished by outside sources unless you’re a compulsive “gotta do it myself” kind of person. Then, good luck!  You’re going to be pulled in many directions at once.  ALWAYS involve your Principal and if there’s a question in your mind, ask first!
