PUTTING ON A PLAY--Part 1

Putting on a play at your school, church or community theatre

PART ONE

“You’ve got to be kidding!!!!!!   You want me to do what??????  But I’m a history teacher…I’ve not ever…I can’t….  And the budget is?  What?  No budget?  Were do I find money for all this?  Imagination?  MY imagination?  History doesn’t require imagination. I can’t, I just can’t!  There’s never been a drama program in this school…well maybe.  For the kids?  Yes, for the kids. Can’t say no…ever, when it comes to the kids.”   And so the story goes.  Smiling and nodding yet?  Sound familiar?

You’re new to the field or have been around forever and you now find yourself caught in the swirling mists of the world of drama and theatre in the school.  Putting fears and doubts aside is important.  Appear to be confident, pretend if you have to, but appear confident even if you’re not.  Take that first step and head for the public library.  There’s a treasure trove of information there to help you get started.  OR, be bold.  Buy a text.  There are hundreds out there and if it’s yours you can write in it.  I know Pioneer Drama Service has a theatrical text titled “Places Please” that offers the how to’s when setting up your youth theatre program.  I’m sure there are many others out there as well.   When you get past the how to’s, you might want to invest in something that includes drama lesson plans like “Theatre Machine I, II, III” do.  They cover many good activities for your kids.  Again, there are other books available from other sources, I only know about Pioneer Drama Service and their theatrical texts.  One thing you might want to think about is the advantage of owning that book.  You can write in it, make notes, draw lines, doodle, fill in the blanks…etc.
