| September 20, 2004 | | How I came to choose a large cast play for a drama club | They needed a drama club. With the cut in funding in Colorado, the Newton Middle School Drama Club was no longer a drama club. It had disappeared. Dozens of students were asking their teachers if the school would ever have a drama club play performed again. With two kids at the school, I decided to jump in. The first meeting drew about 30 kids. In middle school, they tend to be mostly girls with a scattering of boys. I needed to find a play that would meet their needs. This past weekend I chose a melodrama. This melodrama gave me the flexibility of using a lot of girls, a few number of boys and plenty of extras. The art of melodrama also allows for a lot of extras including a master of ceremonies, a warm-up sing along and possibly some olios at the end. Wednesday I'll put on my famous melodrama workshop. Then it will be time to begin. | | |
